My Favorites

All right, here are some of my current favorite Internet web sites. All are worthy of your time for browsing.

Folding @ Home Folding@home
This is a massive distributed computing project run by a group of researchers at Stanford University. The purpose is to unravel the mysteries of protein "folding", which holds enormous potential for curing such diseases as Alzheimers, Parkinson's, and many others. What is unique about their effort is that your own PC participates as part of a massive virtual supercomputer to simulate the protein "folding", so you can make a genuine personal contribution to this research! Basically, you run a small program on your PC which will download small segments of a large simulation, run the analysis, then upload the finished results. The program places no significant drain on your systems resources. They have an excellent scoring system for tracking your work so you can "donate" your work to a specific team, if you wish, or just remain anonymous. My results have been submitted under "peppyfool" (big surprise, huh?) to the Maximum PC team.
Mars Exploration Rovers Mars Exploration Rovers
Since January of 2004, NASA's twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity have been exploring the surface of Mars. Original plans were for a 90-day mission, but their robust designs have allowed greatly extended exploration and discovery.

The largest and most ambitious space probe ever designed by NASA, Cassini-Hyugens has recently arrived at Saturn to conduct a 4-year detailed scientific survey of Saturn and its moons, with a special examination of Saturn's largest moon, Titan.
