T2DEF: Story

In the original Todesangst edition (spoiler alert for those who haven't played it yet!), we learn about Dr. Jack Newell and his horrifyingly successful endeavors to merge Xen and human life. Gordon Freeman nearly falls victim to an assasination attempt engineered by Dr. Newell, causing Gordon to reassume his adventurer role and track down Dr. Newell. During the hunt, Gordon encounters Joe, a courageous member of the Black Mesa security force. Together they hunt down Dr. Newell and eventually succeed in smashing his biological engineering plots. The scheming doctor ironically meets his doom via his own diabolical creation, the "molecular transmutator". Joe activates the control console to transform Dr. Newell into a vicious Xenantromorph. Fade to black - roll the credits - end of story . . .or so we thought!

The story of Todesangst 2: der echte Feind (T2DEF) further develops the internal Black Mesa conspiracy and the human/Xen biological engineering theme. Dr. Newell was the genius mind behind the experimentation and development of the Xenanthromorph program, but unfortunately as in any complex secret collusion, the problem is much worse that it initially seems. The true power behind the clandestine research is a multi-national anarchistic group called Schwarzgeist. During the construction of the Black Mesa compound they began to secretly infiltrate the organization. By the time of the first successful retrieval of biologic matter from Xen, Schwarzgeist personnel were in key scientific positions. They managed to keep their identity secret until an inadvertent exposure during the resonance cascade disaster and ensuing containment revealed their existence.

Although top Black Mesa management and the NSA are now aware of their presence, their true objectives remain a mystery. Intelligence gathering efforts have been hampered by Schwarzgeist's efficient and airtight organization. In fact, Dr. Newell was not a known member of the group until his attempt on Gordon Freeman's life. His human/Xen DNA decoding project and "molecular transmutator" equipment were skillfully disguised as pharmaceutical research. As the story of T2DEF unfolds, Gordon will soon discover just how deep their influence and control of Black Mesa personnel has gone . . . .

FEATURES
Todesangst 2: der echte Feind features the following:

  • A total of 26 individual maps, 19 of which are playable (the rest are cinematic "cut-scene" maps.) This is nearly double the number of playable maps from the original and results in about 2-3 hours of gameplay for the average player. None of the original Todesangst maps are used in T2DEF.

  • Larger, more intertwined maps with settings within Black Mesa, outer space, a Xen-type planet, and Europe.

  • New textures to compliment the settings.

  • Copious coding changes to add new behavior to existing entities & monsters, modify the user interface, and add new tools & weapons

  • The return of Joe and the Xenanthromorph

  • New characters, including humans and alien monsters

  • Extensive voice dialogue tracks for both older characters and the new characters

  • All new MP3 music soundtrack

  • And last but definitely not least: The Kamov Ka-50 Black Shark attack helicopter.

The Ka-50 is deployed to harass the player during key scenes in the plot. If you have never heard of this chopper, it's no surprise. It is one of the last military products developed under the former Soviet Union and has never been deployed in large numbers. Nevertheless, its positively one of the most badass choppers ever made.

What is most striking is its two coaxial counter-rotating main rotors and lack of a tail rotor.? In conventional helicopters a tail rotor is needed to counter the reaction torque of the main rotor and to provide yaw control. Counter rotating main rotors cancel out the reaction torque, thus eliminating the need for a tail rotor. How then, can it turn? By varying the pitch of the rotors, one will "bite" more air than the other and upset the torque balance between them. This torque imbalance causes the chopper to turn in the desired direction. In reality, super fast yaw maneuvers are obtained by this method. Technical jargon aside, it just looks damn awesome! Oh, and the other important feature of the Ka-50 Black Shark is that its armed to the teeth with a 30mm caliber rapid fire (10 rounds per second) cannon, laser guided missiles, conventional rockets, and fragmentation ordinance! It makes an excellent addition to T2DEF.
